Areas of Research/Expertise

With a doctoral thesis in stereochemistry and postdoctoral experience in carbanion and synthetic organic chemistry, Eusebio Juaristi returned to Mexico in 1979 to initiate formal research projects in physical organic chemistry. As an independent researcher in Mexico, Juaristi became leader in topics such as the anomeric effect and related stereoelectronic interactions, enantioselective synthesis of a- and b-amino acids, asymmetric organocatalysis, and green chemistry. His publications have received over 10,000 citations by other authors.

Eusebio Juaristi has directed 41 Ph. D., 24 M. Sc., and 60 B. Sc. research theses. Most of his former students have chosen academic careers, and are presently faculty members in several graduate chemistry programs in Mexico.

Juaristi has been quite active at the Mexican Chemical Society (organizing numerous courses, symposia, and scientific meetings), the Mexican Academy of Sciences (Director of the Latinamerican Chemistry Net www.relaq.mx, Chair of the Distinguished Professorship Program, etc.), and the Mexican Presidential Research Council.

Eusebio Juaristi has received many honors including the Award for Young Scientists 1988 bestowed by the Mexican Academy of Sciences, the Interamerican Prize in Science and Technology granted by the Organization of American States in 1990, recipient of the National Chemistry Award in 1994, the Presidential Medal in 1998, and the Heberto Castillo Award in 2019. Furthermore, he became a member of “El Colegio Nacional” (highest academic honor in Mexico) in 2006. In 2013 he received the Georg Forster Award (Alexander von Humboldt Foundation), and in 2019-2020 a Tinker Visiting Professorship (Stanford University).
